The Outsider: Doppelgängers & Monsters
What a great way to relax during the holidays like reading a supernatural crime thriller by one of the greatest writers of modern horror. My goal is to read at least three book per month, and I subsequently came across The Outsider by Stephen King as a recommendation. The novel was adapted into a limited series in 2020 starring Ben Mendelsohn starring as the titular character Ralph Anderson. Many huge differences from the book, but nonetheless eerie in its own right.

A historical account researched and written by Medieval Literature professor Eric Jager, The Last Duel tells a tale of a legally permitted duel so primeval that changed the legal systems of the Middle Ages. The novel illustrates a riveting page turner of true crime, scandal, and a story so ludicrous and frustrating, readers can feel a familiarity to victims’ accounts in our current period.

Mexican Gothic: The Horror of Colonization
Although Halloween is over, I was able to discover some new materials of gothic literature and horror-Nevertheless, I was determined to read Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Before Goodreads, I relied on Buzzfeed’s recommended reading list; I understand that some may argue it might not be the best source for curated literary collections, but I kept seeing this novel everywhere online. Moreno-Garcia’s novel actually debuted in October 2020, but I finally finished it, er, two weeks ago, and wow; A lot of symbolism, motifs, but I wanted to focus on one, so here we go.
